I heard throwing dead batteries away in the garbage is bad because they contain mercury. What should I do with them then?

My students did a project on this and I learned a LOT. In Pennsylvania, you are permitted to throw away small amounts of alkaline batteries in the garbage. They contain a minuscule amount of mercury, compared to just 8-10 years ago. Some states do recycle them. Nickle-cadmium or lithium batteries are really bad to go into a landfill. These are all those little "button" batteries in toys, rechargeable batteries in cell phones and power drills, etc. Many, many places will take these back. Just about everyone who sells products with them will recycle those batteries... Radio Shack, Lowes, even public libraries or community organizations gather them because they can get $$$ for them.

Contact recyclers in the yellow pages near you, and if they don't know of anybody, contact the EPA in your region.
