this is caused by a poor ground connection. check the socket that holds the bulbs for corrosion. also check for good ground connection to socket.

I replaced a tail/brake light on a 99 Grand Cherokee. By luck (or unluck), I put it in reversed. The bulb and socket are symetrical with no apparent 'keyed' notch or anything. The tail light worked, but with brakes applied, the lamp went off. Reversing the bulb 180 degrees fixed the problem. Try that first - it may be an easy fix.

Check for a lose ground or poor ground connection.Could also be a hot wire touching to metal ground behind light socket.Or,bad connection in light bulb socket.

a wire is touching another someplace and grounding out. Or you have a crudded up socket. Replace the socket first

sometimes when you apply your brakes and your lights dim, it usually is the battery or sometimes even the alternator, that is actually your problem. check those. my fiance' is ICAR certified.

Have you looked at your front turn signal? Sometimes that is a form to get your attention.

I'm not sure, but it was that way for my car once.
