Is it illegal to leave your keys in a running car even if you lock it and it's in your driveway? In the winter I just want to warm it up and defrost the windows while I finish getting ready for work. I know it's illegal and insurance wont cover a stolen car if you leave your keys in the ignition and leave it. But if I locked my doors would it still be covered if stolen?

Believe me I would love to put it in the garage! However there are 2 people that keep their car in the garage. So mine has to stay out.

It is not illegal. Illegal is the thief that stole your car. It is not a law that you must be sitting in your car while it is running. People leave their car running all the time to run errands.

Yes, it is illegal. But, in your driveway will not get you into trouble criminally. Leaving it running at the gas station may get you cited.

Both will not get you paid by the insurance company if it is stolen. That is why there are many new models that will allow you to start the car from in your house, so it can warm up. The car cannot be moved until the key is placed in the ignition.

If you are doing that? Then just get an auto start put on. Also, it is not car theft if the key's are still in it. It is considered joy riding. It is punishable by community service. Still, I don't know if the insurance will cover that. Do you got full coverage insurance?

It depends where you live. It is illegal in Wisconsin. I know, it's a pretty stupid law if you're doing it just to warm the car up. Even if your doors are locked it would most likely not be covered if stolen.

What a great way to waste fuel and damage the environment into the bargain. Even if the doors were locked you would have a hard time winning over any insurance company if they knew what you had done. Why not buy de-icer or scrape the windows like everyone else. Pouring lukewarm water over the screen also works (dont use boiling water or the screen could crack!)

It is illegal to leave a car running unattended in the state of KY. What I did was install a remote starter and an alarm system in addition to the factory one. Works great.

If you leave the keys in the car period, locked or not, insurance isn't gonna cover it.

Is it illegal to do? no. just not wise to do, specially if unlocked.

If you lock it up you are 99.999999999% chance safe...as for 1, you'll hear the glass break as they break into the car...2...what thief would want to steal a car with a broken window in winter???

Nope and it's stupidity unless you do it inside your own garage...why don't you just install a remote starter in it so that it can keep the engine on to warm it up...

You can get these kits on ebay or the auto store...expect to pay from $50-$100 and if you got a bro or cousin that can do it for you, good it not take it to the mechanics to install.
