Wow- maybe I worded my question wrong or most of you don't get it. For the ignorant: my question was, 'how old does a female dog need to be to have a litter.' Thank you to the others who answered legitimately. p.s. The puppies won't end up in the pound because of 'uneducated behavior,' mr dog lover, geez. whats wrong with you people...

I guess what is wrong with people is you. You are doing your research in breeding on a Q+A forum rather then learning the right way. How do you know which answers are correct and which are totally wrong? I guess it doesn't matter because what really is important is the cash you will make. Why else would you look for info from a bunch of strangers that may or may not know what they are talking about. You are nothing more then a greedy backyard breeder.

Shmoopy sure is cute! No (female) dog should have a litter until they are at least 2 years old. There are also many other things to consider before you breed your beloved Shmoopy. There are many pros and cons and it sounds like you may be in over your head! Please get a good vet and ask him/her to give you as much info. as possible. There are many unwanted dogs in shelters and foster care and I would hate to see that happen to any of your puppies due to uneducated behavior.

Females dachsunds are able to have puppies anywhere between 1 and 2 years of age. You should not rush it because having children can be hard on a younger dog.

Your male can get a female pregant if the male is around her while she is in heat. This usually takes place at 6 to 8 months old. You might just have to keep to two seprate while she's in heat if you arn't ready for puppies

Watch for the female to come into heat make sure to keep thm apart if you are not ready for puppies. around the second heat is a good time for breeding.

Huh, males can start breeding pretty quick. Hold off on getting the girlfriend for him..or at least keep them seperated until you are ready.

i know plenty of dogs (all different breeds) that have had puppies while they were just less than a year old.
so yes, it is possible that they can get pregnant.
but unless you have a female dog too, i wouldnt worry about it.
