Xbox 360 And HDTV Problem's?

Hi i have took my xbox downstairs onto my 42 inch samsung HDTV the only problem's are

1.I plug it into the hd component slot and it does not auto switch over

2.The T.V Support Up To 1080i But my xbox will not switch over

(it should auto switch over because my telewest and dvd player auto switch's over)

(the xbox stays on 420p, but will not switch over to 720p or 1080i or 1080p)

I have tried to switch over but it comes up with a black screen then switches back over do you think my cable is broken?

there is a switch on the actual AV plug into the 360 it has two settings, HD and TV....you want HD.
