He doesnt talk much, he doesnt express much either, he is so distant, and when he talks he usually picks, like he makes jokes that irritate.
It is uncomfortable for me because I have no idea what to say to him, he is so short, to me it seems like there is something wrong, like he has a problem, but my husband says, that it is just his personality

That's it, that is his personality, your husband is right there is nothing wrong with you, my father in law is like that, and when he talks to me is to tell me that I am fat. Just treat him with respect, and dont pay attention to him, you are already doing a lot by trying to be nice to him.

It is true; it could just be his personality. This is how he has learned to interact with the world, rather it was from his family background or what he chose. It is now familiar ground to him, and it doesn't sound like he wants to change. He has limitations. He doesn't want to stretch himself to be a better person, even though he probably isn't happy with who he is either. Don't let him take you down with him by buying into his depression and rudeness. His distance and coldness is his way of having power, which says a lot about how powerless he must feel. Since he's part of the family and you have to see him at family gatherings, just remember that inside of him is an unhappy, lonely guy that's calling out for love and doesn't know how to get it. Just ignore his manipulative passive-aggressive tactics, and smother his with kindness.

Ask him questions! Find out where his intrests are then ask him something that will get a conversation going. While hes talking always smile thatll let him know you appreciate what hes telling you. Tell him about your parents. I would just make more of an effort to talk to him even though i was intimidated. My personality is the kind of personailty that gets shy people to open up so its really hard to give you a good answer on what you should do. My father is kind of anti social like that but you get a couple of beers in him hes feeling good and you cant shut him up. GOOD LUCK!

Maybe he's bored or depressed. Or maybe he's shy or just a quiet person and your husband is right. You husband probably knows him better than you but you are right to talk about it. Sometimes depression can go un-noticed for years especially by those closest to the person.

Chances are, that is just his personality. If he says something that offends you, shoot one right back at him. If he sees you're not bothered by it, and that becomes the extent of your relationship, giving each other crap, then so be it. At least you have one!
