If hydrating helps "cure" a hangover, can a hangover be less severe or even avoided if you are well hdyrated when you start drinking?

My ritual is burnt toast, a multi-vitamin and lots of water before bed.

Here's why:

The carbon from the burnt outside acts as a filter to help sweep away toxins. (They use the same idea for victims of alcohol poisoning in the emergency room, except those people get a much more potent carbon mixture pumped into their stomachs.)
The bread helps to absorb some of the alcohol.
The multi-vitamin helps replenish vitamins A, B6, C, potassium, and others which are lost during alcohol metabolism.
The large quantity of water, necessary to down the vitamin and get the burnt taste out of your mouth anyway, helps with the dehydration.

You actually fight the three major causes of a hangover with this: acetaldehyde (the toxic by-product of alcohol metabolism), dehydration and nutrient depletion.

Cheers!

if you stagger each drink with a full 8 oz glass of water, you might be able to stave off some of the hangover. also, do not drink wine or mixed drinks with high sugar content. the extra sugar in alcohol is partly why you feel so bad the next day, no need to compound it by drinking beverages with additional sugars. stick to clear, highly pure, distilled alcohols like vodka or gin, mixed with club soda or diet tonic, for the least hangover symptoms (and lowest amount of calories).

I totally agree that drinking a glass of water between drinks is helpful, but sometimes when you're partying you tend to forget. I've found it helpful to chug a ton of water before you crash. Also, when you wake up in the night to pee (which I'm sure you will), drink alot more water and take a couple of ibuprofen (not Tylenol, it's bad for your liver).

Here's the deal. You dehydrate your body when you drink. Then you probably go to sleep after you're done drinking, don't you? The whole time you're sleeping, your body is trying to recharge, and regenerate the fluids you lost. But you've given your body nothing to work with overnite. This is why your body is sooooo drained in the morning. It's tried all nite to rebuild you out of nothing. Give your body something to work with while you sleep. Drink a Gatorade...or even a glass of water or 2 before you go to sleep. That's all your body needs...just something to work with. I'm tellin ya, a Gatorade before you crash is like the fountain of youth. I $hit you not!

yes, that would help...and if you stay hydrated by drinking water between every few alcoholic beverages, that's even better.
