I would agree with all the wonderful answers already given just wanted to share a tip with you. I find that visualisation is a very powerful tool in helping us get better. Sometimes when we cough, we automatically want to cough again and the air feels dry and the more agitated we get, the more we want to cough. Try having a special place you can go in your head where the air is lovely and humid like on a tropical island. Close your eyes and picture yourself by a waterfall and the air you inhale is warm and fuzzy and peach flavoured. Try to breathe in slowly through your mouth and out through your nose. It will also relax you enough to get over the coughing fit.

Another good thing if you are having a bad attack is to run a hot shower against the wall in the bathroom and inhale the steam to moisten your throat - you could also buy a humidifier which will pump water into the air. If you can't afford one then bowls of water underneath your radiators should do the same job.

Good luck, I wish you all the best - now go beat this thing!

Robert- I have added you to my prayer list. I am a cancer survivor. I now deal with congestive heart failure which comes with an irritating, all consuming cough. I've noticed I cough more when I laugh. I started avoiding laughing. Dumb me. It didn't make the cough any better, but it did steal my joy. Now, I watch every funny, comedy I can lay my hands on. The 3 Stooges are great- Captain Ron...
Laughter do good like a medicine. Even if it doesn't suppress the cough; you won't mind it nearly so much.
Also, I practice deep breathing. It's something that should come naturally- now, I need to concentrate and focus on it.
You may not be able to stop the cough, but you can keep it from stealing Your joy. Be blessed.

Robert, my thoughts are with you and your loved ones right now...my dad had lung cancer....with secondarys in his bones..fortunately the poor love didnot have a cough but got very breathless due to fluid build up. Can your doc not help? There are plenty of things he could and should be providing right now....if you have a nurse visit your home why not see if she can advise?? If you like coffee...try drinking it, coffee helps me with my asthma and coughs as it opens up your airways....a nebuliser is a fantastic idea....and in the meantime...see if steam inhalation helps...but really I think the best port of call would be your doc or oncologist...take care...xxxx

i would try and avoid mucus forming food and drinks eg, dairy products,(milk, cheese,) try and eat as healthily as you can loads of veg and fruit, oily fish (tinned makerel, and sardines, or fresh if you can afford) herbal tea perhaps with some ginger, lemon and honey and take some vitamin suppliments, vit c and zinc and iron, to keep your energy levels up, (dont drink tea with iron though as it depletes it) try and take a bit of gentle exercise, like a walk this will help to get the blood flowing and make you feel better generally. You could buy a dioiniser for your house, this helps to clear the air and may help you breathe easier. xx
