I am an indian citizen with a Canadian work permit.

You'll need a visa to travel into the USA. A Canadian work permit is not sufficiant papers to enter into the USA. Go to the US embassy in your city and apply for one there.

As an Indian Citizen you will need your Passport and a US Visa for temporary visiting. Contact the nearest US Embassy or Consulate listed in the second link. Once at any Consulate page there are information about Visa's and on-line applications.

Any Indian Citizen would need a Visa to enter the U.S. weather you are driving or flying.

You can make an application at any American Embassy in India or Canada

Probably not a problem Canadian border is pretty open. just stop at the nearest border station and ask. If you're just going as a tourist or for shopping, they may just let you on through.

You can fly but you need a passport. You can drive and won't need passports yet.
