You will need a High Definition signal from some source, or the picture will be grainy. It should say on the ads for it that it " requires HD signal".
If you don't mind me saying, I would avoid plasmas. It has some issues with colors, red spots coming on the screen after a couple of years. Things that just are not ironed out yet. I would go with LCD HDTV, with HD/digital cable.

The picture looks fine. It's not grainy unless you get a huge screen. I have a 50" HD plasma that I watch alot of standard TV on and it looks good. Plus I don't sit that close to the TV. You should tell a saleman when shopping around to switch to standard television and judge for yourself. Stand away from the screen about the same distance you would be when watching TV in your house.

Also, check and see if your local channels broadcast in HD. If they do & you buy a HDTV with built-in tuner you can watch HD channels with an indoor HD-antenna. They usually run $20-$50.

i have a 37" lcd and love it. my sister-n-law has a 42" plasma and it playes well. from my reading plasmas has a short lifespan than lcd's. do a little research on the brand you are thinking of buying.
