I am having trouble finding something to wear to a wedding that will be held in Houston in February at 5:00 PM in a church. The reception starts at 7 and goes to midnight.
Most of the dresses I have found are either sleeveless or halter, niether of which I care to wear, or they are black. I know in the past it has been inappropriate to wear black at weddings, but some sources say it is now okay to do if the wedding takes place in the evening. Would an ivory colored pants suit be a good choice? Some sources say that ivory may be too close in color to the bride's gown, however, it is quite evident that the pants suit I am thinking of wearing looks nothing like the bride's gown.

I was at an evening wedding last November and I wore a dressy black dinner dress, and many of the other women there also wore black. The bridesmaids were each in a different dark color: one was in black, the others wore navy, forest green, burgundy, chocolate, etc. I wasn't sure if black would be appropriate either, but I had nothing to wear and could only afford to buy one dress, so it had to be something I would get a lot of use from, and it worked out fine.
But I think the ivory pantsuit would be very nice too. I also think if you did want to get a sleeveless or halter dress, that would be fine if you were able to find a matching jacket or wrap, maybe something beaded. I don't think it will be very cold in Houston next month.
Have fun at the wedding!

Ivory IS a color often worn by brides, so I'd stay away from that one.
Black is now acceptable, though in not every 'circle'...Maybe you could add some 'color' to one of your black outfits, like a fringed sheer shawl or something similar with matching colored heels.

Black is okay in the evening, but don't wear anything even close to white. I am getting married in the evening and I would think people would wear darker colors, and more formalwear than just casual outside daytime wedding wear.

I think you are looking too far into it ... you can definitely wear black .. if the dress is comfortable, go for it.
Whichever you feel most comfortable in .. as for the ivory pants suit .. you'll be wearing PANTS - not a dress, no need to worry.

Depends who you're trying to impress... I'd go with cutoff's and a nice T-shirt ! You'll be comfortable when everyone else is all hot and uncomfortable in the tight dresses and monkey suits! But that's just me.
