Sure. Or in many cases. To the extent that George Orwell had Winston Smith "conditioned" in "1984," such that he would literally see whatever Big Brother told him to see? Probably not.
But an everyday example of brainwashing is kids who believe they deserved to be beaten by their parents for their behavior. You hear them say, "Boy, I really deserved it!" But a) no they clearly didn't, and b) if they had been treated better they never would have acted out in the way that resulted in their being punished.

Ask the followers of the Jim Jones cult, David Koresh and the likes who managed to escape. They will tell you it is of course a fact, that brainwashing works. They usually have a certain "type" of individual who is more apt to be preyed upon. Those who never felt a sense of family or belonging, etc.

I would say yes. I'm a Christian and I want nothing to do with religion - that is definitely a major example of brainwashing. Look at the Pharisees and Saducess - even Jesus rebuked them. You knew this, didn't you?

Of course. If you ask fanatic Muslims "why are you blowing yourself up and loosing life" he will say "I am going to heaven".... How can they trust whoever promised heaven that way??
I can't speak of other brainwashed folk, as I am only disgusted by the ones are a disgrace on my religion.

It certainly does, look at advertising. Its a form readily available to look at. Do you where Nike anything, Polo anything, a baseball cap on your head, smoke, brush your teeth, bleach your hair, have botox, eat TexMex, or drink Bud over Coors, drive a SUV over a Civic, ....need I go on. In sales, it is said...you just have to tell someone 5 times...and they will believe. Media only has to write in the paper three times and half the people are believers, and so on and on.

Yes, because there are a lot of people out there who need to be told what to do and what to believe because they're just not independent. I am one of the heads of the temple I worship in, and I have people coming to me all the time practically begging me to tell them what to do. I won't because in my religion - thinking for yourself is one of the big lessons we try to teach. But I can see how cult and religious leaders could easily take advantage.

It depends on the one's personality, if ur open minded, u won't believe in something because someone TOLD u so, u will try to search for it and find out if it's true or not from TRUSTED sources, thus u will never be brain washed.

depends on the person. some people have weaker more impressionable minds.
i went to a christian school for 12 years. you could clearly see who was brainwashed and who wasnt. some people are just more susceptible to it.
