Spanking will do no good at all. I've had the best luck with filling the holes back in with soil and some of the dog poo. Dogs won't dig in their poop. Good luck!

Why do you have dogs?
I know dogs can have some very frustrating habits but you dont seem to care about them at all. Shoving, spanking and smacking is not going to work and is cruel.
The best thing you can do is put something under the fence. We have put rocks under ours, which has worked but there is a high chance this wont work with yours, they will probably just dig elsewhere. A designated area where they are allowed to dig or a sandpit is normally suggested for this, as some dogs you cant stop them digging because it is their instinct or they simply just enjoy it. But it sounds like you dont want to put in that much effort. Why are you not going to put a footing around your entire perimeter just to stop this?
Maybe you should think about giving them to someone who is willing to properly care for them.

When as soon as you see your dogs digging under the fence shout firmly to them or you could buy a dog whistle, it has a high frequency sound which will probably stop them digging. Another reason is because it's pleasurable and fun. Also to relieve boredom, stress and loneliness. To get away, or to get into the house. My dogs dig to get cool. that's because holes in the ground are more fresh that the hot outside air. Dogs that dig at fences may well be bored and trying to get out to something on the other side of the fence. The scent will especially do this when they can smell something really interesting on the other side of the fence, try lifting some of the dog's own poo and placing that in the hole - few dogs will dig through their own feces. hope this helped

Hitting your dog won't help, and it's cruel. So is shoving them into the hole. This is a difficult habit to break. For some dogs, putting their waste in the hole will stop them, but they may just move on to dig another hole. I've put rocks in the hole, and that seems to work, too. Do you really care for these animals and consider them part of your family? If not, why do you have them? Dogs, like kids, do some pretty annoying things sometimes. Is getting rid of them for a bad habit really what you want to do?

You may have to use electrical wiring on your fence or a shock collar. I had to do this. Put some bright orange tape at the bottom and run an electrical wire close to it. Each time they touch the fence they get a shock and then once you decide to stop using the electricity, they associate the bright orange with shock. (Animal rights people are gonna hate me, but I love my pets and I don't want them to get run over or dognapped!) The shock collar is remote controlled so you would have to be present. Dogs are VERY STUBBORN. Are they spayed/neutered? They may want some lovin'! LOL

I have a digger and usually she does it for a reason (like trying to mother the neighbor's kittens). I was told to get cement blocks and put around yard on the inside. The split rails from fencing is reasonable to put down on ground around fence...It will eventually rot...I also used pieces of fence attached to the wooden fence we have and she dug them up and under!

Spanking them isn't going to get them to stop. In fact they probably have no idea why the heck you are smacking them. I had a bassett hound that did that alot. I had to just keep inside more.

If dogs are left outside alone for too long and get bored, they cause trouble. One of the most common behavior problems they develp is "digging."
Make sure when your dogs are outside doing their business that they are supervised and if you can't be with them, just leave them out long enough to go potty, then bring them right back in.

Zoo doo. Sounds bizarre but you can google zoo doo and your city name and there will surely be a local zoo or big cat rescue place that sells the stuff for garden fertilizer. I guess the dogs think that a tiger or gorilla or whatever has marked its spot there and avoids the place.
