Actually he was a man and the curse made him into a reptile because the Bible teaches the seeds will fight one another and men fight men not snakes. He was a very smart man just like Lucifer was in Heaven. The meaning of the word Serpent is clever, smart, and cunning. You also must remember Adam just named them all before Eve was formed.
The bruising of heal here is Jesus and the head here is the Anti-Christ not a snake; Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
But these words have no meaning if you see it otherwise?
Satan is a man and so is the Serpent and the Bible does say so. Isaiah 14:16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;
Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Revelation 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
Read the words and do understand Serpent was and is a man. The creature that fell is the reptiles but the spirit of the Serpent lives on in mankind.

It wasn't a "snake", it was a "serpent". The same Hebrew word was used to generalize about either snakes, reptiles or mythical monsters, depending on what you're reading.

The original writers of these verses lived at least 4400 years ago and didn't have a large listing of various species to work with. They were more apt to speculate about reptiles in general or about mythical monsters.

It was not a snake. I know this because i have a copy of the story translated directly from the hebrew.

The word used is called 'Nakash' which means one who whispers or a whisperer. It was an actual person who suggested (whispered) what to do (if this story is true) but no specie of snakes can talk because they do not have a larynx (voice box).

The bible don't say which one...

So everyone can say all of the Species of Snakes...

the only one that has the answer is the Creator...

The snake was the instrument that Satan the Devil used...

Of course, the angel that made himself Satan the Devil wanted the worship of mankind something that only belongs to Jehovah God!

Well, originally it had legs, so its not a species that is still around today.

When the serpent caused Eve to sin, God punished it by requiring to slither on its belly along the ground.

It probably looked like that crazy lizard with the big flaps on the side of its head that runs really fast. LOL. (But bigger I assume)

I think snake is a mistranslation. I think it was meant to be a:

burning one
celestial being

Snake in the bible is from the word, Nachash. It means burning one or it can mean snake.

Snakes when they bite you feels like a burning sensation.

* update *

Crawling on the belly was a symbol for humiliation and so was eating dust.

Also being cursed above livestock is a mistranslation too. The word used can mean of all creation including man.

Another meaning for Nachash can be enchanter.

Some churches think it was Satan in disguise. This makes no sense, since the creature was described as a "cunning beast". Also, it's punishment was to lose its legs and crawl on its belly. This myth orginated long before the Hebrews came into contact with the Zoroastrians. After the Captivity in Babylon, they began to make Satan over into an evil god, like the one Zoroastrians believed in (Ahriman).

Who knows. Does it really matter? What could possibly be gained by knowing what species of snake it was?

There is no scriptural background to show what type of snake it was. It says that it was a serpent which spoke to Eve.

So I guess it was a serpent, the most cautious of all the animals at that time.

Hope this helps.
