last weekend target practice. What is alarming is the number of people that responded on owning a gun for self defense. I will give hunters the benefit of the doubt that they have some knowledge of use and safety, and police officer without a doubt have the needed knowledge to use a weapon. But statics show that the average homeowner that buys a gun for self defense is more likely to have that gun turned against them then not. In my twenty years as a police officer I have never had to use my weapon while off duty. so therefore to all you home owners get rid of the gun before you shoot you kid at 3:00 in the morning when all he wants is a glass of water, and you saw a shadow.

I don't own a gun anymore. Unfortunately, gun owners do usually use their guns by accident or otherwise. One night I thought I had a prowler. I called 911, then I waited and the prowler kept coming. I got my gun--it was my then husband. I could have shot my then husband. Then is when I got rid of the gun and vowed to never own one again.

I own many guns. I carry with a concealed carry permit fro protection because I live 25 miles from the mexican border and find myself in isolated areas often. I fire 300 rounds each and every week. I also hunt and compete in long range competitions. I have also trained my wife and she carries as well.

As for those that think they are supremely qualified to carry and/or possess a firearm because they are law enforcement....poppycock. I am much more qualified to carry a gun than you are, I fire more rounds than you, I train more realistically than you. Every person who is able should own a gun, just because they can. They they should take some responsibility and learn how to use it. If you own a gun for self-defense, then learn how to use it for that purpose.

I have several. Each has its own use: deer, elk, varmint, upland game and home defense. I go to the range on a regular basis. Last weekend I took the handguns to a safety course and re-qualified for my concealed carry permit. I've never shot anyone, but have been shot myself. That's why I have my CHL and practice regularly. Oh yeah I got three whitetail deer in December and an elk on a draw in the early fall harvest.

I own several. I use them often. The last time I used them was January 21 for target practice. I have my sidearm too, but I hope to never have to use that for anything other than target practice. I do draw it often though when I have a sweep a building, but that is because you never know what you may find. I used my issued shotgun once to put down a rabid dog. The dog was suspected to be rabid by the local animal control officer, I arrived, put it down, the vet tested it, positive for rabies. I would have felt terrible if it wasn't rabid.

I own several. Like very thing else I own, I have each one for a reason.

.22 for skunks, raccoons, and other small varmints that help themselves to the livestock and materials I use to make a living and help feed the urban population.

30-30 for long distance coyotes, dogs and other raiders that like to sneak in, grab livestock and take off. They're smart enough to stay out of range of a smaller rifle, but can't resist the easy pickings of the food that ends up on your table - unless they get it first.

Shotgun for dusting the behinds of marauding bulls with salt mostly.

.38 pistol for carrying when I'm riding in rough country. Rattlesnakes and other varmints that are a threat to livestock, and in case something terrible happens and I need to put a horse down immediately.

My guns are tools, like my saddle, my pickup, and my cordless drill, and like any tool they can be mishandled or used wrong. But I'm sure glad I have them. It keeps politicians and democrats nervous.

I own several guns. I last used one to harvest a nice mule deer and my wife, my daughter and I are enjoying some of the jerky today.

I shoot a lot more in the warmer months, several thousand rounds in compitition. I enjoy shooting and where I live we have several ranges and gun club with hundreds of participants.

Why do you ask?

Lessee -I gots six firearms. Last time I used one was when I loaded up my Model 1860 Colt Navy with blank charges and attended a Civil War reenactment, where I blasted away at a gang of Johnnies trying to wreck the Union and cussing at President Lincoln like madmen. Got three of them blasted Rebs a'fore they done got me. The Union forever! Hurrah, boys, hurrah!

Reenacting is great fun, commemorates and honors the sacrifices of our fallen heroes, and it's the only way I put my guns - all cap-and-ball weapons - to use any more. C'mon out and join us!

I own several, and have several issued to me through my Department. I shoot quite often, and I urge all who own a gun for self protection to practise with it more often than "every few months or last year." Proficiency is earned, not given with the gun.
