I have a 4 year old son who love his computer and has in the past found ways to crash my computer (i.e. missing ntldr) and i was wondering if there is a way to run windows xp home edition off of a dvd+/r without actually having to install it on the computer.
So, he can just leave the disk in place and run windows from the disk. i really hate having to reinstall windows everytime it crashes.

Can't be done, but you might consider getting as second hard drive on which you can install Windows just for him. Then you can switch out hard drives just for him.

I would also consider looking for ways of locking him out of the system when he is on the computer. By NOT giving him administrative priveledges, he can't delete anything or 'crash' things.

I never heard windows can run on CD without installed. But I do have a CD that can run Linux from CD without have to install them to HD. I can type some documents, browse internet, and several fun things. Why don't give your 4 yrs old son an Ubuntu Live CD (linux)?
