Nothing really hidden!
It is the hat that was worn by the Ancient priests of DAGON = the fish god.
REALLY!
(I do not feel that this is a way to honour THE GOD/JESUS! )

The pontifical mitre is of Roman origin: it is derived from a non-liturgical head-covering distinctive of the pope, the camelaucum, to which also the tiara is to be traced. The camelaucum was worn as early as the beginning of the eighth century, as is shown by tho biography of Pope Constantine I (708- 815) in the "Liber Pontificalis". The same headcovering is also mentioned in the so-called "Donation of Constantine". The Ninth Ordo states that the camelaucum was made of white stuff and shaped like a helmet. The coins of Sergius III (904-11) and of Benedict VII (974-83), on which St. Peter is portrayed wearing a camelaucum, give the cap the form of a cone, the original shape of the mitre.

Well, I never thought if it in that way, but in the NT Jesus wants his apostles to be "fishers of men." Also, the pope's ring is called the "Fisherman's Ring."
So right there are two tie-ins off the top of my head.

simon d,
There is nothing hidden. It was the style of hat worn several centuries ago. It has since become a uniform of a kind.
Now folks will attribute several meanings to it, but that is hind-sight.
Basically, it wasn't anything special, just something to keep his head warm.

I am not sure about why it is shaped the way it is but you might find this interesting. A while back in side that hat, in Roman was the words Vicar Of Christ. In roman as with several other languages, numbers & letters share the same symbols...If you took the words and read it as numbers instead of letters, when you added them up they added 666. No kidding !
But here is a stite all about the hat, that might answer your question...

Here is one about 666.
