I have lived in South Korea for 5 years on-and-off, but go back 2-3 times a year (my wife is Korean). There are so many things to see: in Seoul, the modern and shopping as well as Kwongbok Gong (Palace), DukSoo Gong, etc. As Korean cities go, Seoul is only 700 years old, so isn't as ancient as other places. I lived for 2 years in Taegu, which is in the middle of the country, surrounded by mountains, has great apples, but can be very hot in the Summer. I really like the area around Kum Gang (River) north of Taegu - really beautiful! There is also Sokcho on the east coast with lovely mountains. Down south, the location of ancient Shilla, there are many temples and historic sites. Pusan has a fascinating fresh seafood market. Make sure you visit all the relatives - Koreans value family ties and loyalty. You will have a great time!

Since I am living here -

Visit the DMZ - you'll be scared, but happy later that you did.

Visit any/all historical buildings and areas that you can. There's a wealth of history here.

Do you like to shop? Definitely try Namdaemun and Tongdaemun in Seoul. Especially, try going around 2-3am in the morning. That's the time for the best bargains.

Stay away from Itaewon! This area located almost next to Yongsan Garrison where the U.S. military is based. You'll pay the tourist prices there! Remember, Namdaemun and Tongdaemun is where the vendors in Itaewon buy their merchandise.

Remember that the capital of Seoul is not "the center of Korea" as tourists tend to believe. There are other, equally fascinating places to visit.

Korea is good for traveling, but be aware it's cold right now.

They have beautiful mountains and some nice temples. Seoul is OK for shopping but more expensive than other countries in that area. Kyoungju has some nice historical things to see. And lots of yummy spicy food. But several months of traveling in Korea? I am not sure why anyone would want to do that. If I were you, I'd spend a couple weeks in Korea and fly to Japan, China or Hong Kong or even further south into southeast asia.

I lived in Korea for a year with my husband (military). We lived in Waegwon (pronounced waygone), we lived off of post in a little shack that was probably built during the Korean War. I loved it there. Shopping, eating, taking the train to Seoul. Definately go to Soul. I even had a job as a lifeguard on post. I thought everyone there was very nice.

just stay in seoul if you're american. there's nothing to do anywhere else for a foreigner. If you're going in the summer go to like busan or something but other than that, korea is mostly countryside. You wouldn't understand the culture. There's a lot to do in seoul. go shopping, get plastic surgery. you know all that stuff.
