From the factory...

2.0L 4-Cylinder: 115hp @ 5400rpm with 122ft/lb torque

2.8L 6-Cylinder: 172hp @ 5800rpm with 173ft/lb torque

Stay away from 2.0's. The 2.8L VR6's are really fun.

1997 Golf GTis were either 115BHP for the 8v or 150BHP for the 16v version

The VR6 was never badged GTi

8v gti's were 115 bhp and quite slow. 16v was 150 bhp and a lot more fun. vr6 models are ok if you have a lot of money to run them
