My vet just told me to use shredded Newspaper instead of cat litter for a few days but I have an extra bag of the Kaytee total comfort which is like recycled newspaper. Is this OK to use in his litter box?

The main reason for switching to newspaper is because cat litter is clay, which is, basically, dirt. And dirt in a wound is not a good thing. And shredded paper is not as fine as clay dust, especially the clumping kind, so it will not get into the incisions. As long as what you have is not dirt and not tiny shreds, it should be fine.

Yes, it will be fine.
Your vet wants to keep the cat's recent surgery area clean and as free of dirt etc.
Various cat litters may contain silica, clay etc along with additives for scent etc, all that can get into a wound and cause possible infections.
Just use the paper, remove all soiled after each use and replace with clean. Keep the cat as celan as possible, do not allow him outdoors.

Yes as long as there is no dirt in it, it needs to be paper but that kind is like paper and shouldn't cause any infections. You could call vet and ask just to make sure.
