I live in the Middle East and I've been hearing that Americans in teh US think that we are giving Iraqis freedom and protecting our own country from terrorism through this war. Are we still so naive? Is Bush lying or does he believe this too. Islam and democracy cannot coexist! I don't get it.

I'm an American, and not retarded. There is no democracy in this region (kings and dictators in every country except for Israel) and though I would like to think that Iraq would be the first, I hardly think that it's possible. The Sunnis are no going to let the Shiites adn the Kurds have their say, much less tell them what to do. And Islam doesn't allow for democracy. The God of Islam wants infidels to convert or die. This is no foundation for a democracy.

the USA really needs to change our "might makes right" mentality when it comes to foreign policy.. we need to stop pissing everyone off because it won't be long before nuclear weapons become small and compact enough that people can start easily sneaking them into our major cities.. I know I'll get some thumbs-down for this, but it's only a matter of time before it happens.. we need to quit making the world hate us before it's too late (if it isn't already)..

Islam and Democracy cannot coexist? Tell that to the people in Turkey and the Kurdish regions of Iraq.

What cannot coexist is Sharia Law and Democracy. Sharia is by definition a totalitarian govermental scheme whereby there is no debate or dissent - there is only the Koran and its tenets. Freedom is never imposed, it is simply chosen.

The true fear of the Islamists is a successful transition from murderous tyranny to a democratic form of government. That success may inspire change in the other nations of that region and put them out of power.

I am just asking why we are being so politically correct about this whole war. I think we really need to get tougher on these people and we can end the war much faster that way. We really just need to take lessons from Hitler. We need to remember that Iraq is NOT the only threat. Iran has been making threats as well. There are many counrties that are threats.

Remember that America stands for basic freedoms and freedom of religion is one of those basic Freedoms. If we destroy Islam, then we are destory the religious freedoms of other people. THat is not what America is all about. I know that ALL religious groups have fanatics who say they are acting in the name of their religion or in the name of God, and when you really study thier religion, you will find that they are not, and most times the leadership is opposed to that behavior. If we are using your reasoning, then we should destroy Catholisism, because some of their preists were sex-offenders.

I think That Bush DOES get it. He just Can't get EVERONE ELSE to get it.

We need to remember that we are the UNITED States of America. It is time that Americans UNITE around our president. We should be happy that we have someone who really does get it, and hope that he is replaced by someone else who understands the gravity of the situation.

Well, lets see:

We gave the Iraqi people a choice in what type of government they wanted.

We allowed the Iraqi people to vote for the members of Parliament.

The Iraqi people now have a free press.

The Iraqi people now have a viable economy.

The fact is that Iraq _is_ now a democracy. The Iraqi people want a democracy but the terrorists want to impose a dictatorship on them.

The reason you and your people are fighting us in Iraq is that you are terrified of what will happen when we demonstrate that Islam and Democracy can co-exist.

Well, I don't know that things are worse in Iraq. Guess if you were a Sadam support things are a lot worse. If you were one of the ones being suppressed by Sadam I doubt seriously if things are worse. It doesn't get much worse than being run through a shredder feet first.

Seems to be working in Turkey. And I've heard that the Kurdish regions are doing pretty good. I'd bet they wouldn't agree with your "worse" accessment.

I think as long as we have people willing to do the job we should give the Iraqis a chance.

Well, first the story was go in to get WMD and Saddam. Then the story was to bring freedom. The real truth was to make $$$$ for certain industries like oil & defense for the Republican "base." Again, the lying elite screws over the "average joes."

BTW, I think democracy is a good thing.

Where in Middle East do you live? Is there no democracy there?
Religion has always had problems co existing with government, but it does not mean that it can not. The US is an example of co-existing, we have all types of religions & there is peace. I do not think the President or Americans are niave (we have seen too much to be naive) but many of us are hopeful.

I am and have been for 4 years or however long it has been. We never should have gone in i believed that from the beginning. We went into iraq in response to 911... but iraq and 911 arent related in any way. Life in America has NOT improved because of the war. And im sure the same goes for iraq! 20 years down the road Iraq is gonna be the looked at as the biggest mistake of the 21st century.

Those nice folks in Iraq should be enjoying the democracy right about now according to most Americans.

You get it, my friend....it's the Americans that don't. They have absolutely no concept of what the rest of the world is about. They elect a dufus, wave the flag when he declares war contrary to the opinion of the rest of the world...then when it all falls apart, they claim to have nothing to do with it.

Like the little kid that throws the stone then runs away.
