I think it might be accurate to say that meditation is the means by which you can come to the state of conscious awareness. I would describe this state as being alert, present and aware of the thoughts in your mind... sort of passively watching everything as it comes by. Sort of like watching things being swept down a moving river. This state of mind is the alternative to the way in which most human beings spend their entire lives which is rather unconscious... lost in thought and dragged around by their emotions and thoughts, lost in emotion, desire or aversion; being re-active rather than mindful. To be in this very alert and present state of mind consistently is called "enlightenment". Or so they say. Meditation is the practice of becoming aware of all that is happening within you so to speak. Not to judge or criticize or to like something more than something else, but to just watch your cravings, your aversions your thoughts and judgments and see that they really aren't anything. They are impermanent and come and go. Meditation can be done with eyes open or closed. The practice of sitting meditation is more or less to set an intention of mindfulness that you carry with you always, not just while you are sitting cross legged on a cushion. Hope that helps.
