Actually, just last week it was reported that it's physical/chemical in the brain. There's a spot in the brain that controls addiction, and it was destroyed by a stroke in a guy who chain-smoked for a long time. After the stroke, he "forgot" that he was addicted to nicotine, and didn't have the urge to smoke.

Lots of research will be going on in that area inthe next few years.
