It's bad for both parties - you don't know who's car you're getting into, & the person picking you up doesn't know the sort of person YOU are, so It's best just to walk, or get a bus if you can.

cause you don't know what kind of weirdo is going to pick you up and leave you for dead. I have only hitch hiked one time and that was when I was young and there was no cell phones and I was in California with an abusive man. So I hitch hike a ride to the airport to go back home. It was scary but it was a risk I had to take cause it was either get beat up by the guy I was seeing or take the risk of some stranger giving me a ride and I got lucky to have a nice person pick me up and not hurt me.

If you are British, it is very bad to hitch-hike, because it makes you totally paranoid and want to write to Yahoo Answers.

It is a fact of life that people are totally irrational; and nowhere more than in England today.

If there was a headline, "Escaped tiger eats pet dog," the streets would be deserted, yet a tiger wouldn't eat more than one child or a couple of dogs every other day.

If the next day, the headlines declared, "Tiger shot dead by police marksman," the streets would be full again.

Now which is it safer to do, take your chances with the tiger, or walk past city-centre pubs late at night, after crossing a hundred roads bustling with traffic?

99.9% of the time, "research shows" that most hitch-hikers get to their destinations safely, but 100% of escaped tigers die on the streets.

If you care about your life , you will neither pick up a hitch hiker or hitch hick yourself. This is not a safe world we live in and it gets worse every day. So many twisted minds and mean spirited people are out there. You cannot go by how one looks either. Looks can be so deceiving. Be safe, stay free of hitch hiking.~

It is bad to hitch hike because history has shown that over and over again people take a ride and their destination is death. It works both ways. Giving a ride can lead you to your death as well. Thousands of people have picked up a hitchiking woman or man to be nice and it is a set up. It's safer to just not go anywhere with anyone you do not know unless it is a service you are paying for like Greyhound, etc.

Ride a Bike~Don't Hitch Hike~

I don't think it's bad to hitch hike. I personally don't pick them up because you don't know who they are and whether they're dangerous or genuinally looking for a lift. On the other side who says a driver wouldn't be dangerous to the hitch hiker.

Because unless you're planning to pay the person who picks you up, hitch hiking is begging, and begging is the demeaning immoral act of using force, with guilt as your weapon, against a fellow human being. All interactions between human beings should be arranged on the basis of fair trade. With no mysticism, no force, and no unreason. That is civilization.

Bad?
Yes, an element of risk does exist, but its a great way to meet people and get around for free. You are at much higher risk leaving a city centre club at night and I bet a lot of the others who have answered your question do so without a second thought.

Because, it isn't safe. The person who gives you a ride could be a knife carrying maniac and it isn't safe for the driver either because, the hitch hiker could be someone with a weapon.
