I have heard different takes on this, I am just curious, does hair dye take better to clean dry hair, or to hair that has styling product in it?

It takes better if it is clean. First off, colour attaches to protein in your hair. If you add MORE protein, you get better colour. They make many hair conditioners that have mega doses of protein in them. Another reason is you can risk getting a chemical burn if you dont shampoo your hair with a clairifying shampoo. Clairifying shampoos take out all the toxins, medicine, and build up out of your hair. Medicine can stay in your hair 3 months longer than it does in your body! You can get blisters on your scalp if you dont remove the medicine. Another reason you should shampoo and condition before is because of the damp sponge theory. A damp sponge picks up more moisture than a dry sponge. Same with your hair. Your hair will pull in more hair color if you hair is wet.
In the old days, when hair colour had more ammonia and was more damaging to your scalp and hair, it was beneficial to not wash your hair because your natural oils would protect your scalp. But, now hair colour is made more gentle and you need to get rid of all that stuff coating your hair so you can get a true, great, long lasting colour!

If you have product in your hair I would wash it (with shampoo only, no conditioner... Conditioner leaves a film that prevents haircolor from penetrating evenly (at least with many waxed based store bought product lines)! Let your hair air dry or blowdry on low heat only! Do not brush the hair before a chemical service so you do not irritate the scalp! Product will prevent haircolor from penetrating the cuticle and result in an uneven result!

I have heard that you shouldn't wash your hair the day before you dye it. It needs some natural oil to take well. The girl that cuts my hair told me that.

Depends on the dye:
Bleach - not dying whatsoever. Your hair needs a bit of natural oils to protect the scalp. Don't wash your hair for a few days.
Normal dying process with highrise or normal colour: Washing is recommended.

Wash hair 24 hours in advance. You hair needs the natural oils to coat (protect) the scalp.

READ the instructions. It will say this also.

You do not need clean hair. If you do wash it do not use conditioner. They conditioner will coat they hair and make it harder for the dye to penetrate the hair shaft.

need to wash abotu 24hrs in advance. The oils protect scalp when you dye your hair. If you wash to close to your dye job the dye may "burn" your scalp.
