The wording here-for cheap-is a put off. You must be realistic-even rescues have to cover costs and often charge $100-250 in fees. You can locate rescues through the AKC website. They will run a background check (make sure you have space and time for a Dal as they need loads and loads of exercise and attention). Also, Dals have a lot of health issues now due to poor breeding. You will have to account for that and add it to yearly costs like food and routine vet care. Expect you cheap dog to cost between $300 and $500 a year depending on the type of food and the preventive care items (like heartworm and flea drops). My dog is smaller than a dal and eats 20 pounds a month of a quality food. Then her first shots and spay were about $300 for all those trips. And heartworm and flea drops-$40 a month. A cheap dog is an illusion that doesn't exist. Most shelters and rescues will sour on the request if you phrase it like that and aren't looking at the long term. Start adding in puppy training classes, leashes, bedding, in my case electronic fencing-you can easily add another $400-500 in the first month. My advise, save up, research breeds and get a dog that is a good fit-not just because of the fireman/dal link. My hubby is a fireman and we have a dog who is bred to hunt-we realized Dals are too much work for our family at this time.

Call around to local shelters. About 25% of shelter dogs are purebreds.
