It has happened a few times. The most memorable, and I think the most recent, was in September 2001 at Ascot in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

SUMMONER was put in the race by Godolphin to act as a pacemaker to Noverre (winner of the Sussex Stakes and the French 2,000 Guineas, although he was disqualified from the later). He set off at a blistering pace leading by 6 lengths and managed to hold on by a length and a half from his stablemate Noverre. His SP was 33-1.

You can usually get a good price about the pacemakers (except in France where they are coupled with the first string horse). They often run into a place at avery nice price!

That was funny. Never heard of a horse with a pacemaker, let alone one that was doing any racing.

I just read that they "put down" the Kentucky Derby winner. Too many complications.

I've often wondered that. I guess it must have happened somewhere, sometime.
