Baking american chocolate cookies in an European oven leaves me wondering what degrees I need to use.

The equivalent setting would be 180 c.
Be careful, if the oven is fan assisted drop that to 170 c or you will have burnt cookies

Long time trial and experimentation!! Some of my great grandmother's recipes call for medium hot oven!! But they also call for a lump of butter the size of a pullet egg, a lump of soda the size of a black walnut, a tea cup of milk, etc. I have decoded her recipes into modern measurements, and stuck an oven thermometer in the old wood stove oven out in the bunk house and come up with medium hot oven is around 350!! Medium hot was tested by Grandmother as when a drop of water on the oven door danced 3 to 5 times before it was gone.

An easy way to get this information is to go into Google and type 350F = ?C and it will give you the answer.

It's a happy medium. It keeps something moist, yet still cooked through. It also makes sure it isn't burnt on the outside and undercooked, or dry on the inside and not browned enough.

If your in the UK or have a gas stove it would be Gas Mark 4, electric 175 .
