Pain of this sort is a way of acheiving gnosis, or a trance state. There are many ways that people do this, not just with piercings. Drugs work, but are generally frowned upon. Fasting works, but isn't healthy. My personal preferred method is dancing to the point of exhaustion. Anyway, once you reach a trance state, your spirit-mind is free from your physical form and can understand things that the mind cannot understand within the confines of the skull.

The purpose of piercing was a form of body mutilation (and still is in some pagan religions) for the purpose of bringing pain to your body. The essence of this behavior was to earn your way into a religious kingdom such as Heaven by works, rather than by faith. You would earn your way into Heaven by enduring painful experiences such as piercings, and have the wounds to prove it.
