First, it's an axle - an axis the line through the earth on which it spins. Second - It is likely a crack. Get it checked out ASAP!

a bad bearing, loose spindle, or some problem in the steering mechanisms such as tie rod or other part on the wheels or springs.

need more info, what year, 2 or 4 wheel drive, front or rear? poss. ball joints.
