On a day when you don't have to look your best, if you're staying in or whatever, don't wash it, your mum's right, the more you wash it, the greasier it becomes. If you can have a gap of just one day, you'll then go on to wash it every other day instead of every day.
As for the shampoo, don't use sleek and shine ones, they contain more glycerine than the others to smooth hair, which in turn makes it appear greasy after a short time.
A good one is Pantene for Normal Hair or Greasy Hair.

I've had oily hair ever since I hit puberty. Let me tell you, I've tried almost all of the oily hair shampoos out there... drugstore brands, salon, all-natural... and I have yet to find a product that truly helps.
I don't really think there's much we can do to get rid of this problem, but I find that any type of clarifying shampoo followed by a light conditioner on the ends only will help. The Pantene clarifying shampoo -- it's a clear blue color -- will give you a deep clean without making your hair feel like straw. I also like the Aussie shampoo and conditioner (it just changed it's name to "double mend") a lot. It treats and greasy scalp AND dry ends.
I personally don't believe that "don't wash your hair every day" crap. The people that say that don't have oily hair and don't have any idea how disgusting it feels or how itchy it becomes if it hasn't been washed.
Finally, don't run your fingers through your hair too much -- otherwise, it will get even more oily!

I am afraid you mum is right. The more you wash your hair the greasier it gets. I would suggest that you use a shampoo for greasy hair and go easy on conditioner or use the conditioner first and then shampoo it. Maybe at the weekend don't wash it. So that if you wash it Friday morning and then don't wash it again till Monday you will see the difference

I wash my hair every two days and find that my hair gets quite greasy towards the last day. I use just normal shampoos and deep conditioning treatments usually.
I think my problem was brushing and fiddling with my hair too often. I was forever re-styling and touching my hair throughout the day, so try and cut back on that.
A good shampoo to use will be one that is especially for greasy hair, maybe by head and shoulders or sunsilk.

Try a baby shampoo ie Johnson's
No conditioner on if possible
Do two washes in stead
Don't wash your hair every day it washes out all the natural oils.

Your mum is right, washing your hair everyday will strip your scalp of its natural oils and washing your hair everyday causing the scalp to over stimulate producing more oil. I suggest only washing it three times a week .
Tips
Try not to over brush your hair and scalp too often cause the more you brush the more oil you'll produce
Try a clarifying shampoo this type of shampoo is the best for greasy scalp as it draws the excess oil and grime from your hair leaving it looking more normal.
Only condition the mid lengths and ends of your hair as your scalp doesnt need to be conditioned as this is new hair which is already in good condition.
Try and wear your hair down as much as possible and try not to use a lot of hair products on your scalp.

Iwork in a hair salon, am am wondering what kind of shampoo you are now using?
You should use a shampoo that is gently enough for everyday use. Not one for an oily hair. The more you dry out your hair, the more oil it will produce.
Nexxus is a line that is professional and now available in drugstores. I would try something from that line but a gentle one, and then a light conditioner. Remember adding products such as gel or smoothing serums make hair attract dirt and oil faster.

dont wash ur hair everyday, it makes ur hair work over time producing more and more oils making it greasy, just use shampoos and conditioners that are specially formulated for greasy/oily hair, which u can buy ever where, but dont buy anything too cheap, somewhere around the £5 each mark usually is good quality stuff. also dont use too much products on ur hair such as gels/wax/hairspray, they make ur hair greasy. and dont brush ur hair too much or run ur hands threw ur hair, the oils off ur hands transfers to ur hair making it look greasy. good luck!
