My father was 7 years old in 1907, and his photographs had to be made by a professional photographer and are on thick cardboard. They depict a little boy in a wide lacy collar with a favorite toy, a bear that had wheels on his feet. His father was a doctor and made house calls every day. In the winter, when the snow was high, he used a horse-drawn sleigh to get to his patients. Most people in 1907 had their "toilets" in the privy in the backyard. Few people had electric lighting in their houses; most town houses has gaslights. Food was heavier than now. My 1906 cookbook calls for lard (rendered animal fat) in almost everything they made. Where lard wasn't used, butter was. Oleomargarine was only used by the very poor or the vegetarians they had. Women still wore skirts to the floor and men wore hats whenever they went to any social function. Women wore hats to the same functions and gloves, and carried little or no money, since the only time they went out was when they were accompanied by men, who did all the paying. The Wright brothers had just taken a heavier than air plane into the skies a few years before. Telephones had been in wealthy homes for about a decade but the avarge family didn't have or want one. If you wanted music, you played the piano, or went to one of the many civic concerts put on by amateurs.

Instant messaging of today is a far step from mouth to ear which was the method, along with letters and telegraph, way back in the early twentieth Century. Also, think of the role of satellites in our communications today, Internet chips, computers, direction and computer map information in privately owned cars, roving robots on Mars and finally ten year old's having a network of friends at her finger tips on her personal phone.
It is amazing progress that has been displayed in communications. However, how we use and utilize these inventions is a different story with a different set of problems.

People can talk instantly to almost anyone around the world today. In 1907, long distance calls were almost unheard of, and if you did make a call it was about 3 dollars per minute-their money, not today's. Today, computer chips, satelites, and other new inovations make todays communications devices smaller, more affordable, and quicker.
