I may be relocated from IL to CA for work. If I own an AR-15 that is legal in IL am I able to register it in CA as is or must I have it modified to be legal in CA. I understand the modification that must take place for the AR to be legal in CA - I'm just wondering if since I already purchased one as a resident of another state am I allowed to own it in CA as it is? ...or am I required to have the modification made to it when I register it in CA?

i'd do what cps said. dont ask, dont tell. unless u go shooting yer mouth off about all ur toys, they dont need to know what u have on the truck. mention 'ar-15' to a ca. cop, and the 1st thing he's gonna have flash thru his mind is......gangbanger/drug runner

Lonewolf has a good point. But how about trying something else...don't ask, don't tell. Are you required to check in with the CA police? Do you intend to take it to a public shooting range?

If you don't plan on taking it out of your residence, put the thing in your trunk, drive to CA, then put it in your closet. Unless you have reason to suspect the police are going to search your domicile on a regular basis and you don't blab to people what you have, how are they going to find it?

You'll have to transport it yourself. Moving companies will generally not transport a firearm.

The best thing to do instead of asking for what others think is correct, is to ask the authorities in CA before you go out there.

To get an accurate answer, contact your local ATF office, since the weapon will be transported interstate and moving from one state to another with different requirements. Nice toy, by the way,,,

the law here says you must have a short clip "permanently" installed.

in reality it largely depends on what part of California you move too.
in most places those laws are not enforced...
they are written by and enforced in the bay area and southern Calif.
