I have long-lasting depression. I've been on meds since '94, still have it, and it's getting worse. At times, it's hard to work, I cry a lot and have feelings of loneliness, emptiness is prevalent, and I worry on a consistent basis. Don't know what else to do??? Maybe those who suffer like I do can e-mail me?

Do you see your doctor regularly? Is this doctor a psychiatrist, or at least in the mental sense. Even a good counselor can be of help. Make sure you go to see them every week!! I would advise not to be doing alcohol or drugs as this will worsen the situation!! Maybe you need to change your medicine also, as not all medicine has the same effect on different people. I was told, one has to find the right key to unlock the mind. So you may need a simple change of anti depressants. If you are in a lousy job, get out of it no matter what it takes. There is always some other job out there. A dead end job can have an enormous negative effect on a person. Believe me, what I have told you here, I have changed myself for the better and I am doing great!!! I have even been off of the antidepressants for close to 2 months. Oh, one more thing, get God in your life!!! This is a must!!!! Not necessarily organized religion, just an agreement with one and the Lord. I myself, don't care really for church, I just have my faith in the Lord.

I have lived with depression since I was a teenager. I am now 50 years old. I have and always will need medication to balance out my brain chemistry ... I always have to be aware of my symptoms because sometimes meds have to be readjusted. I will be having a readjustment of meds this Thursday when I see my doctor. I have learned that I can never take my mental health for granted even being on medication.

=================

Right now, the symptoms of depression are controling your life. Medication can make all the difference in the world.

I am a mentor. I help others by sharing my experience so that they can gain insight and education so that they don't have to go thru the things I have ... so they can realize that medication can alter their life so that they feel healthy ... feel that they feel llike doing things ... look forward to the day instead of dreading it.

This is what I found best that works for me and the ladies that come my way .... My advice. Do an internet search for "depression self assessment" ... take those questions and copy into a document ... answer those questions and PRINT OUT or write the ones that apply to you. ...

Go to your doctor and give that list to him/her. You would not believe how much doctors appreciate the lists of symptoms .... It is the most effecient way to help your doctor help you.

============
Just because you are on medication does not mean you are on the medication that will work best for you. The vast array of medications available today have less side effects. Sometimes it's trial and error to get the most effective cocktail .... but it all starts with ... Doctor, I have this list of things that are going on with me (symptoms) ... help me find a solution so that I will feel healthy.

Some medications can help in just a couple days to feel better... others take longer to be the most effective so patience is needed.

Ultimately, it is up to you. You have to give the doctor the right information so that prompt and proper actions can be made to improve your life.

I am no doctor, and you should really seek the advice from someone who is knowledgeable in this area. Anyone can answer here...and some do not care about you.

Meds will not take care of everything, that I know. If you have a chemical imbalance, which is what most long-term depression suffers have, has to be treated with meds...The problem is that your body gets used to those meds. You may need to change the type of med your using...I know many who have to switch their meds twice a year.

There are also alternative ways to help yourself...look around on the internet for naturopathic meds that do work...I myself prefer a good regimen of naturopathic stuff to keep my mind and body healthy.

If you have a naturopathic doctor in your area, it could not hurt to get a consult.

I have chronic depression as well and can understand where you are coming from.
Since you are still experiencing the symptoms of depression, it most likely means that your medication/treatment is not working for you. Obviously I don't know your history with medication and treatment, but I recommend that you consult your doctor/psychiatrist about this immediately. If you have to take time off of work to get yourself taken care of, it's worth it in the long run. No one deserves to suffer for as long as you have.
I wish you the best and my heart goes out to you.

what helps me is my lovley husky. Animal therapy is proven to reduce many health conditions along with depression. The unconditional love, cutness, furryness. another thing is think there are always people worse off than you or try working towards a goal( not to hard).
