Is this a safe neighborhood? I know it's N.Y. and all, but how safe is it here? Considering renting and Apt. for the weekend here.

It's not a bad neighborhood and it's certainly up and coming. Many of the empty lots that were there in the past years are filling up with buildings. Lots of young families are moving in as many of the older immigrants who spent their lives their are passing on.
It's probably as safe as any decent area of Manhattan, though you can always run into trouble in any neighborhood if you're there at the wrong time. Otherwise, I'd go there if I were you.
Then you can check out Kossars Bialys for the best bialys anywhere. The place is 75 years old. The Pickle Guys (former location of Gus's Pickles )are also right there on Grand Street a block or two from Clinton St.
