My wifes last name is Sullivan and she chose to take my last name when we were married and I thought naming our first son Sullivan (call him Sully maybe) would be a strong irish name for him, but I have never heard Sullivan used as a first name, any opinions?

I personally love the idea as using last names as first names. Sullivan for a little boy is adorable! I have a friend who also named her little boy from her maiden name "Wilson". My little one is named Bennett, not a real common first name but very common for the second. Sully- too cute!

Sullivan isnt really a very nice first name...why not give it to him as a middle name and just a short first name...maybe thats an idea? for example...Tom Sullivan Smith (or whatever your surname is)...

plus of course, at school..he might take longer than the other kids to learn how to spell his first name!! - with Tom he will be ahead!! - good luck buddy!

Love the name, great way to honor you wife and her family, you could even go with Michael Sullivan ?? Or Sullivan Timothy ?? Trying to stay with the Irish influence. I am married to an Irish man here are some of his traditional Irish family names.

Frank
Timothy
Patrick
Ryan
James
Daniel
Michael
Martin
Joseph
Bernard

Teach him how to box while you are calling him sully, cuz he will be mocked and laughed at.

Sullivan is a LAST name. You want to honor your wife's family, use it as a middle name.

LOL, the family parties would be a hoot, you yell Sullivan and they all answer WHAT!

I really do like your idea-I do think Sullivan is cute-Sully especially. BUT, I have 2 young children and I can't help but think of the Disney movie Monsters Inc.-the main monster characters name is SULLY. He's the monster that is big and blue. Watch it and you'll understand

You're kidding, right?

What about now-11-year-old actor Sullivan Sweeten(who, along w/ twin brother Sawyer and older sister Madylin, played the kids on "Everybody Loves Raymond"?)...

"Sullivan" sounds perfect to me...don't let those snobs get to you w/ those "Monsters, Inc." insults...GO FOR IT!...

I personally would have killed my parents if they had named me "Sullivan". No offense.
