You're thinking of the old testament god. He was all fire and pain and righteous vengeance. Then came the new testament, and he fathered a child out of wedlock, and managed to get away without paying child support, which sent Mary into a self-destructive cycle of drinking, and left his rather depressed son to seek his death by getting nailed to a cross.
After all of that, is it any wonder that the new testament god is on Prozac?

To begin, those whom Yah struck down on the spot were a testimony to the children of Yisrael that they could learn to obey Him. He has shown them the might of His arm so that they would learn to obey.
He also confirmed the words given to the Apostles with a mighty arm and great works for the purpose of the hearers. But it is not a must that Yahuweh acts as we think He should or as He did in those cases. For it is written:
Ecc 8:11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
Men continue in their transgressions and evil deeds because they don't think that they will suffer the consequences of their actions, but Yah is not mocked, we shall reap what we have sown.
Look at Katrina, 9-11, the many natural disasters, and the wars going on. Yah is still judging and punishing. But yet everyone is judged in His timing.
Nah 1:3 The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
Yah controls the wind, rain, and all aspects of nature.
Amo 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil [calamity] in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
By His own words, we see that there is no calamity done without his hand, though He is not talking about sins commited by man. Yahuweh is smiting many for their evil deeds. Some receive it now and some later. But no man shall escape the consequences of their actions unless they repent and cease from their sins.
Lam 3:39 Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?
Jer 51:27-29 Set ye up a standard in the land, blow the trumpet among the nations, prepare the nations against her, call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashchenaz; appoint a captain against her; cause the horses to come up as the rough caterpillers. Prepare against her the nations with the kings of the Medes, the captains thereof, and all the rulers thereof, and all the land of his dominion. And the land shall tremble and sorrow: for every purpose of the LORD shall be performed against Babylon, to make the land of Babylon a desolation without an inhabitant.
He even uses nations to punish other nations for the evils they've commited. The world is in the state it is in now because it is so wicked and being judged.

Because God is not a Dispenser of justice, but his Laws are.
He would not need to act in this way, simply because what you do unto others you only do unto yourself, in this life or in other lives.

Do you think God should "smite" people based on your opinion of who should be "smitten"? God has his plans and they are not for us to know. I believe if people are truly evil, they will be judged in the end.

good question, but I do not have the answers for any of these questions. I too would love to know why all of the murderers, rapists and child molestors are allowed to live and get away with what they do. maybe someone out there could let me in on the secret of what god really does.

My interpretation has continually been that it's not the devil's decision as to who is going to Heaven or Hell. quite, GOD is the guy who punishes the evildoers, by using no longer allowing them into Heaven. for this reason they bypass to Hell and go through WITH the devil. as nicely, if stable human beings have been rewarded by using God, and evil human beings have been rewarded by using the devil, then each and every physique could be rewarded no rely what they do, and that only does no longer make experience. The devil would not owe absolutely everyone favors. stable question in spite of the undeniable fact that, philosophically!

It does seem that the god of the bible was a heck of a lot more pro-active.
