The heart of Puerto Rico is dominated by the Commercial Centre (an extension is in the process of being constructed), the largest of four, which houses a plentiful number of shops, bars and restaurants.

At one end of this main valley area is the Aqua Park and at the other pretty tropical gardens which lead to a lido and the mostly pedestrianised promenade lined with beach bars, restaurants and bazaars.

The second largest, the Europa Centre, sits at the top of the south-westernmost hill and the two smaller, at Agua de Perra, a stone's throw away from the Deportivo harbourat the north-eastern end and the Pasarella shopping centre close to Puerto Escala at the south-western end of the resort. Again they boast a good selection of bars and restaurants.

Crescent-shaped, the man-made, sandy beach is safe for bathing and is flanked by the harbours, both of which serve as a base for the many yachts which visit the port and for the boat trips and water sports for which the resort is famous.

From the south-western end of the promenade a stroll along the cliffside walkway takes you further south-west to the beach at Playa de Amadores, one of the vantage points at dusk for watching the sun slip down behind Tenerife. This happens amazingly quickly so make sure you get there in time!!

Should you tire of Puerto Rico's attractions, a regular ferry service from either harbour will take you to Puerto de Mogán or to Arguineguín via Anfi, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the lovely coastline of part of the south and south-west. These are also all easily accessible by bus, taxi or car.

Try Excursions or a shopping trip to Las Palmas to pick up those discounted designer offers!!

Bistro Frere is a small but
excellent restaurant in the Europa Centre at the top of Puerto Rico. The food is said to be first rate and the hosts Nigel and Alice famously welcoming.

Bioluminescent Bay

This experience was phenomenal. I'd been reading about it for a few years and was just waiting for the opportunity to do it. I finally did, and it just blew me away. You can read about it and have people describe it to you, but you can't understand just how cool it is until you see it. It's one of the most amazing things I've done in my life, and I'm so glad we did it while we were there. There are a few tours that will take you out there. We went with Blue Caribe. The overall experience was amazing; I'm not sure, though, how the other tour groups are since I only went with them, but there are some things one should know. They give you a very short briefing before they take you out, which is a rapid-fire list of key points about the outing. It was a little too quickly thrown together, I think, because the trip requires some work. You are going to be taken barefoot in the dark through the rough and put into your kayak, and then you will have to briskly kayak out to the site...which is not that close. They vaguely told us it was a little ways out there so "anyone not up for it" should say so now. Once out there, they tell you to watch for the lights on their necklaces...but once they are about 30 feet away in the pitch black bay, you can lose them. We did. We paddled around the bay lost for a little while, coming across other Bio Bay tours, who were not that helpful in directing us to our group. Once we (thankfully) found our group, they were apologetic about losing us. Once there, however, the experience was truly amazing, and I have to give great credit to Pedro (one of our leaders) for his very informative talk he gave from his kayak. He's a wildlife biologist and he was very educational and provided tons of information about the dinoflagellates and the bay itself. So, other than the getting lost part, it was awesome. I'd ask around and find out what peoples' experiences were with the other tours.

Puerto Rico is a surprisingly small resort, it is built round a nice beach and the hotels just seem to go up and up, all round it. The hotels are built on VERY steep hills.

There is a small shopping area, some pubs and a very nice little harbour.

There are some nice boat excursions- whale watching etc.

If you want to explore the island you'd really need to hire a car but the roads are not for the faint hearted.

I've been twice - Argeunigan is nicer and Patalavaca. We hired a car last time we were there and it was much better, you can properly expore the island then....

It's always been very hot when we've been so be careful!!
