Well it all depends on what kind of camera you are using. But basically you can change your shutter speed to a faster shutter speed and or closed down you F stop do decrease the size of the apeture that the light/image travels to the film plane.

Avoid shooting subjects with bright light, such as the sun behind them, you should have the light at your back, not theirs.

If the camera is automatic sometimes you can point the lens at a brighter part of the scene you are shooting, slightly depress the shutter button and the camera will make the settings based on that brighter spot of the scene, then just reposition the camera and snap away.

meter your shot from the medium to lightest part of the shot. IE if someone is wearing a light blue or green t-shirt. Meter off the t-shirt be pressing half-way on the shutter while centering your shot on the shirt. Once the camera has decided it's exposure, move the camera back to the way you wanted to frame it, then press the shudder all the way. If you are using a manual or traditional camera try bracketing. that means to take several shots at below and above what you think the shot should be. This will help to train you on what to look for when framing and setting the exposure of your shots.
