Yes, the owners finally decided the horse had suffered enough. there was no possible recovery for him, he couldn't walk or stand.
He was put to sleep this morning, and it's past time to end this animal's suffering.

Truly sad! I was so certain that Barbaro was going to pull through. He fought so hard for 8 months, he will forever have a lasting affect on the Horse Racing and Vetinarian world! Barbaro you will be missed!!

OMG when did this happen??!! I have been following his progress on The University of Pennsylvania's School Of Vet Medicine site up until last Friday. Poor Barbaro. I really grew to love him although I didn't really "know" him. I truly respect and admire the owners for doing all they could to save him. I really thought he was gonna make it. How sad. He will surely be missed. Let this be a lesson to all these people who like to profit from these beautiful creatures.

The UPenn Vet site is swamped, but Tim Woolley Racing has been posting Barbaro updates for months, and has confirmed this.

yeah I guess he did get put to sleep. I was just reading that he was going to have a risky surgery because of a setback this weekend but then they just posted a story saying he was euthanized. Here is the article

I feel sorry for him but it was his time to go. He is better off now. My thoughts are with his owners and everyone who was touched by his story

Yes. I love horses, and felt a particular fondness--as did many of us--for him, but he's been through enough pain. It's all so sad.

Finally, poor horse... greed reared it's ugly head on this one. If he had been in the hands of an owner who cared more about the horse than about the stud fees this would have happened a long time ago.
