What are the fees charged for buying a used car from a private party in California? Is there sales tax?

I am interested in knowing what I will need to pay over and above the sales price of a private party used car. I was surprised when someone told me I would need to pay sales tax in addition to other fees. The car I'm interested in cost around $10,000. I couldn't find much info on the DMV site.

Well.. you ALWAYS PAY SALEX TAX on cars. You may not have noticed because when people finance cars at the dealership it is often included into the payments. But the salex tax has always been there.

The other fees involved are transfering the title to your name, and new tag.

For about $10,000 you're looking at approximately $850.00 sales tax (depending on your state) and about $150.00 for tag and title transfer.
