A typical deployment is any where from6 to 7 months sometimes longer depending on the ships mission and the ships relief ( you cant just leave when your 6 months is up you have to be relieved by another battle group). A ship gos out for deployment ever 18 months or so, you go in to a yard period for anywhere from 8 months to 15 months depending on how much work the ship needs. Before the deployment every ship has to go through "work ups" and what that is, is joining of the whole battle group you'll be deploying with so that everyone gets a feel for each other, usually this is about 30 days.
Even though this is the bulk of underway time you will still go out to sea for a few days to a few weeks. Thats life in the Navy.
There are some jobs where you go to shore first and then to sea, unless you already have a sea going rate such as QM. OS, BM, IC, EN, MM, and so on...PS, YN, LN, and MA have a 50 50 chance of going to a ship or shore. See Bee's almost never go to ships unless there catching a ride some where. Theres a saying in the Navy " chose your rate, chose your fate " so if you dont want to get underway often then do some research on jobs in the , to see what will suit you.

My husband is in the Navy and currently stationed in Bahrain. While most ship deployments are from 3 to 9 months, other assignments can be for much longer. He is there in Bahrain for a total of 16 months. This was to be a 12 month unaccompanied tour however due to the school finishing early, it became 16 months. My husband has been on a few other "under ways" that lasted from a few weeks to several months. With my hubby in Bahrain right now, I have no command support back here in the states. We have a 4 year old child.

It's unlikely you will be on a ship for 6-9 months any more. Deployments went away a couple years ago and were replaced by surge units. On the average, you may see up to 15-20 days a quarter underway. That's it. If you go for 6-9 months, it will occur once every 2-3 years. On a ship, you have the ability to get college courses done, email the family, surf the net, and make phone calls home. Things have changed a lot in the last couple years. Go have some fun.

while 6-9 months is correct for combat units like carriers and escorts. It isn't true for auxiliaries like tenders and tugs. If you are stationed on such a vessel it will spend most of it's time in port. This is true for most auxiliaries except AO's and AOE's they tend to follow the task forces around and are gone just as long. So not every ship is a doomed to roam the oceans some stay tied to the pier.

that's just a deployment.. you could be underway a few days here, a couple weeks there, a month over that way. no such thing as 6 months straight being gone than tied up tot he pier for 18 months. there will ALWAYS be training evoltuions, for the ships' crew as well as the Air det. there will be excercises and joint movements and a whole bunch of other things( to include Captain's whim and the occasional shopping trip to Hong Kong)

Your family will just have to get used to you not be ing around 24/7

Depends on what kind of ship you are on. Most ships deploy every 12-20 months. During that time your ship will be in and out of it's port conducting training.

I can not answer that. I do not know who can. Maybe their is a sailor out their that can. What I wanted to say is this I joined the Army because after duty you can go home. Being on the ship after duty you are still on a ship. Life is very tough of military families you will spend allot of time away and the family will have to fend for its own the best they can. All branches of service have vast and extensive family support services available.
Good luck and thanks for joining you have my respect, welcome to the fellowship.

Okay...First off..What kind of ship. Deployments will vary depending on the ship. :) But a 6-9 month cruise is normal. I have done my share of them. :)

Upon average that is about right... depending on what type of ship you are stationed on, some are gone for a year or two...
