Of course both look so different it is a matter of taste of which look as a background for your diamond you prefer. I've had a couple of both rings in my day and can tell you that i indeed did have an allergic rash develop on my finger when i wouldn't get it all the way dry after washing my hands with an engagement ring that was yellow gold. I don't know the properties side of it, but Platinum (which honestly i would have nothing else now) has no such reaction and is hypoallergenic. Platinum is noticeably heavier and in my opinion makes the diamond look better and the whole ring look more valuable and classy and rich. Platinum is more expensive though so if cost is an issue, you may want to consider the yellow gold, because if eventually there are two more rings to consider here--you'll want the wedding bands to match (his and hers) and if the price of platinum is a problem, the yellow gold is cheaper.

It all depends on the wearers personal preference. If you like yellow gold, then by all means that would be the choice to go with. Some people don't like yellow gold and they go with either a white gold, or platinum. They do have some that would include both. You just really have to know the preference of the person who will be wearing the ring.

Platinum is more popular and is of course a stronger metal than gold. However, if it's the look you are going for, why not choose white gold instead? You get the look of platinum without the hefty price tag. See my ring on my 360 page, its white gold.

Platinum is too expensive but yellow gold looks too old. Why not try white gold?

Yellow gold is classic and durable. Platinum and white gold are just a fad currently going around.

I prefer platinum but that's only becuase I don't like Gold. It don't like the way it looks, especially on me. Platinum is more unique though too and not a lot of ppl have it.

I agree to look at what kind of jewelry she wears because most women only wear silver or gold, not both. My sister's friend had white gold and it got all scratched, so platinum is a lot more durable but wayyy expensive, gold or white-gold is probably more practical.

Try to pay attention to what she usually wears. Color is important. I wear nothing but yellow gold, because i dont like anything silver or that looks silver color which would be platinum or white gold. Best bet is to see what she wears. If she wears yellow and white then go for white gold with diamons engagement band. If all you see is yellow then go for yellow.

Platnium is the best! Thats like the best of the best, but if you want a similar look, you could also go for white gold. I wanted a platnium engagement/wedding ring, but he bought a white gold one, and I think it looks awesome. I'm sure some people can tell the difference between the two, but I'm not much of a jewelry person anyways, so I'm happy!
