In most cases, it hurts for a few days, and you feel a discomfort for about a month.

In some cases you don't feel pain at all.

In other cases, it might hurt more than a few days and it's best to use pain killers.

It depends on whether of not the tooth had an inflamed infection. If the tooth is not inflamed it should not be uncomfortable once the procedure is done. If it's inflamed sometimes it's really hard for the dentist to get the tooth completely numb during the procudure and thus you may feel it to a degree. When you get a root canal they remove the tooth's nerve but, all that poking and proding can irritate the area around the teeth. Some people even complain of the tooth/teeth above or below bothering them. This is due to the nerves and were they are placed in the mouth. The pain if any should subside in a week or two( the same amount of time it would take for a scrape on your knee to heel(for instance). Ibuphrofen or motrin should help with any minor discomfort. I also hear chewing on the side where the root canal was done is sometimes uncomfortable. This too will subside once the healing begins.

Everyone is different but I had my root canal after never having had a cavity. The pain lasted not more than the day of the procedure . Any pain or discomfort that I felt was a complete relief compared to the throbbing intense pre-root canal pain.

After you get the initial novacaine injection, that should be the end of pain. Sometimes there is limited discomfort during the root canal process, but after you leave the dentist, pain should all be history.

well don't worry about this pain, this will subside by using some analgesic and some antibiotics. but if still you feel pain after getting complete your root canal treatment so you should get X-Ray of the tooth. and ask your dentist to examine weather some residuals of pulp are still left in canal, and this might be causing pain.

It shouldn't be too bad. I have had three of them and didn't even need tylenol afterwards..some pressure, heat and cold sensitivity maybe.
