I have been waiting 3 months to see a consultant surgeon.

My GP said they sent the referral to the consultant on 28th october 2006. i have been ringing the surgeons secretary every 2 weeks since then and she has confirmed nothing has been received!

All the GP says is that they have sent it....yet it clearly hasnt been received!!!

What can i do?
With the secretary telling me to ask the GP to fax directly to her, (which i have done) and the GP ignoring my requests i am at a loose end, and STILL waiting for my outpatients appointment!!!

The GP seems non-committal?

Help! :-)

You need to see your GP again in person. Hospitals are unable to send out appointments without a doctor's referral letter. If your GP is unhelpful, try to see someone else in the practice. Why don't you ask for a copy of the original referral letter and then send it on yourself? You are entitled to have a copy of all letters written about you. This really is an unacceptable delay and you probably have grounds for an official complaint.

Go to your GP's office. Get a copy of the referral yourself and take it directly to the surgeon's office.

speak to the secretary at the surgery and if the letter has been done she can fax it if it really hasn't been done she can hound the gp. You are also entitiled to see your records so if you suspect a cover up you could always ask to see them (I bet the letter will get sent then!)

Every NHS Hospital has a PALS (Patient Advisory Liaison Service).

Complain to them and your referral will either be found quickly, or will be sent again, and you will probably get fast-tracked.

Go to another GP as yours does not seem to be interested in your well-being.

Ask the Doctor again and if he still refuses threaten to report him to the local health authority. See how quickly he moves then!

I absolutely agree with "bmac". Handle this yourself and you will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it's been done. Have one of these offices make a copy for you.
