I asked a vet that question once, he said it was part of the cat greeting ritual. Unfortunate ritual, yes? I just pick Kitty up and turn her around whenever she does that.

It's a friendly greeting. He's showing his trust in you and his like for you by inviting you to sniff his butt, just as he would if you were another cat that was his friend.

Since you aren't a cat and certainly aren't interested in sniffing his butt, just acknowledge his gesture of friendship by giving him a pet, then turn him around to face you, and start petting his face & neck instead.

I am not really sure but maybe it has something to do with cats alway smelling other cats butts. So they figure you want to smell their butt so they just stick it right up there to ya. lol

Like dogs sniff eachother's butts, cats do, too. Problem is that cats are confused about what they are and think people should do as they do.

they do this so you cat pet their tail, usually when they put their butt in our face our first action is to grab their lower back(near the tail) and pet them away. They love when we pet their tails! Well i have 4 cats and thats what they love.

This is the way your cat says hi or good morning, go to a place that has a lot cats and watch how they interact with one an other.
you are part of his pride and he is letting you know that he cares.

He is showing you he is receptive to attention. To break him of this immediately pet him and keep him turned around with the end you like facing you. keep him in that position untill he has had enough. scratching him under the chin and ears will keep him facing towards you and get him to approach you face first.

I think it must be the way a cat communicates Hello and that they are open to you. I've seen them do that to each other a lot, when they are friends.

I think its a greeting , my Yorkie does it also when around the cats , but he likes to tease so it could be the safest area to get scratched also LOL .

I agree with you. At least cats don't sniff other cats' rear ends tho!
