I understand the concept of poker, & which cards needed to build the best possible hand, etc. I am wondering how the machine itself works. Does it hv only one "wheel", like most slot machines? Or, do they hv 5 seperate wheels, for each card that can be randomly drawn? I know it based on a concept of 1 - 52 card deck, but if the machine has 5 seperate wheels to draw on, how does it "know", not to draw duplicate cards, etc???

First off, even if they had 'wheels' like a slot machine, which they don't it would still be impossible to get duplicate cards. Every time a slot machine spins the exact finishing location of the wheels is predetermined. They are not just stopped at random intervals.

In video poker there are no wheels or reels, just a screen. A computer inside shuffles the cards randomly using a random number generator. The cards are then displayed on the screen.

I wrote a program for this once, you can see it on the web site in the link. It is a fairly simple matter to create a virtual deck of cards. You know there are 52 cards so you generate a random number from 1-52. Each number corresponds to a card. Once you have picked a card you try again. The program remembers which cards have already been picked, so if an already picked card is chosen again the program is forced to pick a new random number. It keeps doing this until a second card has been picked at random, then a third and so on. You can see on the web site link that a random five card poker hand is displayed every time the page is refreshed. This isn't exactly how a casino video poker machine works, but it is an example of how random cards can be displayed without a duplicate.

Software prevents it from drawing duplicate cards, just like software in Yahoo! Poker prevents IT from presenting duplicate cards to users.

Coding a poker game is actually pretty simple. It's all about probability and exceptions.
