I just wonder why the shites and the sunnis posed any kind of threat to the United States, especially when it's obvious they're more concerned with each other?
Irrational thinking. Probably religion--a usual suspect--in this case.

Well, Sunnis and Shiites have many differences in religion; whether these differences are basic or even minor. Throughout Islamic history, Sunnis and Shiites have always fought each other. In medieval times, Shiites would seek the alliance of Christian Europe against the Sunnis. This happened during the Crusades (1097-1291) and during the great days of the Ottoman Empire (1299-1922).
In short, I as a Sunni have found many difficult situatutions with Shiites. Some of them pretend to love the Sunnis, but most of them are uneasy with us; we the same.
Actually America has been seen to have given the Shiites a golden oppurtunity by giving power and government to the Shiites in Iraq; something that could lead to a Shiite unified front composed of Iran, Iraq, Azerbijan, and parts of Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. If this occurs, then the Sunni world will be greatly divided apart geographically; for North Africa, Arabia and Syria will be in the west, while Pakistan, Afghanistan, Central Asia, Bangladesh and Indonesia, Malaysia,...etc shall be in the east; with a very long distance separating them from the Sunnis of the west.
As for me, I have encountered Shiites; some of whom were very secular, while others were very religious. In short, I've found them to use diplomacy with me; as I'm a Sunni. That was in personal treatment. In Hajj, I've found them to be very proud of themselves and very eager to show their differences with the Sunnis. I've even read that many Sunni scholars treat them on the same level of Christians and Jews.

Well, if you are referring to the situation in Iraq, Sunnis and Shiites are fighting mainly because of how things were and now, under Sadam's reign Sunnis were in control, and Saddam did do so many biasts actions towards the Shiites therefore, many there harboured great hatred to Sunnis.
But in countries like Saudi, Lebanon ( before the political tension that it is in ) Shiites and Sunnis were living in relative harmonies.. see we have many many differences and occasionally it rises many arguments and some people belonging to sects are biasts therefore they are ready to injure or kill the opposite sect.
Sunnis strongly believe that they are right, and Shiites strongly believe that they are right...

I'm not certain of details but it really has to do with their loyalty splitting to two different leaders of Islam after the death of Muhammed.
