The test expires at the end of the month two years after you take the test say you took it Feb. 2, 2004 it expires Feb 28, 2006. I am a pilot and would recommend getting the books now and reading if you read them and really learn them you will pass it no problem without even needing to pay for ground school thats what i did. you can get some of these books at Barnes and Noble or the local airport: FAR/AIM 2007 and any brand Private Pilot Manual, i recommend Jeppesen, and Private Pilto Exam study book. you can get these from www.sportys.com a huge avation supplier and they have a free practice test on their website which is almost identical to the actual test. should cost around $100 for the 3 books.

As far as just taking the ground school it can't hurt to take now, but you will need to take again in 10 years. If you were to take your knowledge test (written exam) after completing ground school that is only go for 24 calender months, you would need to retake the test if you did not pass your practical test within those 24 months. OK.... Anyone who said 2 years is wrong.....
The CORRECT answer is 24 calendar months from the date of the test.
example:
You take a test on May 24, 2004. You have until May 31, 2006.

Taking the class and test now won't buy you anything if you don't plan to get the license within 2 years -- the statute of limitations.
It would be better to buy one of the popular ground school books (gleim, Kings DVDs, etc.) and study on your own. Then, have an AGI or CFI sign you off to take your exam when you are ready.

The only value in it for you would be getting familiar with the
subject, expanding your mind. I'd recommend taking the class
but not taking the written test.
