Start by singing a song that covers the topic that will be talked about. This is especially helpful if you have small children.
Then assigning someone to give an opening prayer.
Then have someone read a scripture verse on the topic the lesson will be about.
Someone else (probably you if this is your first FHE) gives an age appropriate lesson on the topic of your choice. Usually about 5 or 10 minutes if you have small children, and even teens, but the time isn't important, it's that you have a meaningful conversation with your family concerning a topic that is of importance to your family. Topics can include any Gospel topic. And since practically anything can be a Gospel topic (either something TO do, or something NOT to do) you can pretty much pick anything. You can either prepare or just wing it, depending on your own knowledge and preference.
After the lesson, you can do an activity that reinforces the lesson.
Then, a closing prayer which should include a blessing over the snack if you choose to include one. And finally every child's favorite part, the snack itself! :)

If your spouse is willing to help, set aside thirty minutes at the minimum each Monday evening, beginning with a prayer, a hymn, and then scripture discussion or activity. If children are in the mix, make sure you have some sort of dessert ready for them. Keep it light, but try to keep the sacredness of the evening impressed upon the young minds.
Moreover, the Church's magazine, the "Ensign," is an excellent tool in helping you organize a Family Home Evening and what pursuits to follow. If you don't subscribe to the magazine, do so. It is only $10 a year.
Good luck and have patience, love, and persistence

So easy! Great idea! Get your family together and talk about the day or plan your week or play games. We start and end with a prayer, we sing a song, we include a little snack like popcorn or ice cream. (No dessert before...) Sometimes we teach a Bible story to the children or sometimes we learn about other things. Sometimes it's just fun and playing. Family Home Evening is so flexible. Take a walk. Play a sport. Go swimming. Get out the Scrabble game. The most important thing is to be together and show your family that they are the most important thing in the world.

If you have older children, you can have your family watch one of the Mormon Youth messages youtube videos, and then base the discussion on it if you are out of other ideas :)
